Pride and Persistence: Stories of Queer Activism

Available from your favourite book shop or directly from Second Story Press.

This is my first writing project for middle-grade to teen readers. I’m a big fan of hearing people’s stories, and that’s what I got to do, interviewing 14 people for this book. They are people who have stood up for the queer community, whether on their own behalf or in support of people they love. Some made a difference by confronting injustice, others by simply daring to be themselves.

Review, Canadian Children’s Book News, Winter 2023-2024: Pride & Persistence: Stories of Queer Activism, written by Mary Fairhurst Breen and illustrated by Katy Dockrill, is an outstanding inspirational,  educational and engaging exploration of more than a dozen people who have faced exclusivity and discrimination because of their gender identity and sexuality… An important resource for classrooms, and home and public libraries everywhere, this thought-provoking book will also serve to launch much keen and critical discussion around not only the massive changes that have happened but also all the changes that still need to come for future generations. As Fairhurst Breen says in her introduction, “You can start  to change things just by making honest connections with yourself and others. Whoever you are, wherever you are, I hope the stories in this book make you think, ‘I can do that!’” Very highly recommended.
